Ive got the brake shoe material from my local auto parts store but now need the bonding adhesive. If the drum wont fit adjust the star wheel to collapse the shoes farther in so the drum slides over.
Push down on and turn the springretainer until the pin and alignment slot line up.
How to put on brake shoes. In a drum brake system wheel studs protrude from the brakes backing plate. A pan-shaped drum fits over the mechanism backing plate and studs with a hydraulic wheel cylinder and curved brake shoes inside. When you step on the brake pedal hydraulic pressure from brake fluid activates a piston in the wheel cylinder.
Place the shoe set against the backing plate and secure it. Press the brake shoe set with the new brake pads up against the backing plate then reinstall the brake shoe clips you removed previously to hold the brake set in place. Some drum brake sets will come with replacement clips in the event you damaged the old ones.
Make sure the brake shoes are clean and free of contamination. Slide the new or re-machined drum over the wheel studs and shoes onto the hub. If the drum wont fit adjust the star wheel to collapse the shoes farther in so the drum slides over.
If you replaced the wheel cylinders bleed them now. Brake shoes are put together as an assembly then attached to the car as a unit. You have two brake shoes inside each brake drum held in place by a series of pins springs and brackets.
There is a pair of pins one on either side of the assembly that will need to be removed first. These pins are spring loaded. Get your retainer springs ready to go.
To get your shoes back on in my case we are going to have to get underneath of it to push this pin back to hold it in place. It will be a little bit easier when you have it on the axle. By the way quarter turns is all it takes to put them on or off.
And what you can do is put your adjuster back in there. Ive got to put a new brake on my old Clausing lathe. Ive got the brake shoe material from my local auto parts store but now need the bonding adhesive.
Ive looked and looked on the net for something readily available and cant find anything unless its made in India. The brake backing plates should be cleaned and lubed with a small amount of anti-seize on the slide points and anchor. Screw the self adjuster back in.
One side will be a left-hand thread. Place the self adjuster on the new shoes and spread the tops apart to tighten the spring. Put the shoes back.
Disassembling the Brakes. Review your car manual for specifics on how your cars brakes are put together. Generally the brake is held on to the rotor by nuts and a brake cover is installed again via nuts for servicing.
Be sure to not loosen the nuts that hold the brake. Only work on the ones that would release the brake cover. Watch this free instructional video demonstrating the installation of brake shoes on a Ford 600.
In this newest series of tractor repair videos offered exclusively online at SteinerTractorTV Rachel Gingell shows you helpful tips when installing new brakes. Watch as Rachel takes you through the installation from start to finish. Install the hold down pins through the backing plate and brake shoe.
Then mount the spring and retainer in place. Push down on and turn the springretainer until the pin and alignment slot line up. Use a brake spring compressor tool to do this.
Apply the new brake lining and place the pad in a pressure press for a couple of hours to ensure that the glue has properly cured and bonded with the lining. Once this is done all you need to do is carry on the same procedure for the second brake pad. Reinstall the brake pads by following the steps above in reverse order.
Brake shoes are found only at the rear wheels in cars with a drum brake system. When you step on the brake pedal brake shoes press against the brake drums to cause friction that slows down the car. Brake shoes usually last twice as long as brake pads.
Apply brake grease to the contact points where the brake shoes touch the backing plate and the piston face. Also apply brake grease to the pivot points at the hold-down pins the operating lever and the adjuster lever. Reassemble the brake by following steps in the reverse order.
Refer to the wheel on the opposite side as a guide. Refitting the shoes is simply a case of reversing the removal process. That is attach the springs to the new shoes then place one shoe in its correct position on the plate before levering the other shoe into position.
This process must be done with a firm grip due to the spring pressure again wearing suitable gloves. Pry the emergency brake cable into the front brake shoe slot with vise grip pliers Lift the front brake shoe into place Thread the retaining pin into the brake shoe Put the adjuster into place. Panhead hydraulic rear brakes.
In 1958 hydraulically actuated rear brakes were introduced. Drums and sprockets Early 1958 drums are stamped steel with 18 rivet holes. Same as mechanical brake.
Late 1958-1959 are cast steel with 18 rivet holes1-516 shoe. 1960-1962 cast steel with 316 rivet holes.
